Sunny Greece has a surplus of solar in its energy mix, and the government is now supporting the buildout of battery storage to handle the associated fluctuations. This offers valuable opportunities for BESS monetization.
BESS is already integrated into the day-ahead and intraday markets through the Greek exchange HEnEX, with 650 MW expected to go live by the end of June 2026. The earlier you enter the market the more profitable your asset will be. To succeed commercially in the Greek market, you need two things:
enspired's solution, offered in collaboration with Optimus Energy, provides everything you need for a successful BESS project. Be a first mover and take advantage of our full cross-market optimization service, with direct access already waiting for you.
Do you have a battery project to optimize in Greece? Working closely with local market specialists, we ensure the most profitable optimization strategy for your asset. We help you with financing, revenue models, market access, regulations, performance warranties, and all other project components.

"Greece is facing extreme curtailments around noon and during seasons of low demand. That's why we have to integrate 4-5 GW of storage until 2030. Together with enspired, we can finally bring battery optimization to the Greek market and create a strategic advantage. enspired's platform allows us to establish a one-stop shop for all-inclusive battery and energy storage optimization services. If you want to leverage the full potential of a new market, you need to shape it from day one, and enspired’s technology makes that possible."

What banks and lenders should know about battery storage and available revenue models when making financing decisions for this asset class.

Transparency drives market maturity, but existing BESS revenue claims lack verifiability. The new portfolio performance metric addresses both.

How do you profitably optimize grey co-location (BESS + PV)? Which revenue scenarios can be expected? Find the answers here, examples included.

So much solar, so little storage: Greece is struggling to balance PV overproduction – a valuable opportunity for BESS to provide flexibility.
Cross-market battery optimization strategically distributes BESS capacity across all relevant power markets to maximize revenues and support grid stability. Currently, storage systems can be marketed for ancillary services in FCR (Frequency Containment Reserve), aFRR (automatic Frequency Restoration Reserve) energy, and aFRR capacity, all of which are regulated by the TSO (Transmission System Operator).
While mFRR (manual Frequency Restoration Reserve) is currently not relevant for cross-market optimization, it is essential to additionally branch out into wholesales, also known as the spot market, which covers day-ahead, intraday, and continuous intraday auctions. These are not regulated by the TSO and do not require pre-qualifications or security of supply. Instead, they can be accessed directly through the power exchange. It is commonly observed in the European market that batteries are placed in ancillary services only (mostly FCR), which puts asset owners at risk and makes them financially vulnerable.
Through cross-market battery optimization, you benefit from revenue stacking, revenue maximization, commercial diversification, risk mitigation, and arbitrage opportunities all at the same time.
Greece has one of the most attractive day-ahead market spreads in Europe, with near-zero prices during midday RES oversupply and often extremely high evening peak prices. This creates ideal arbitrage conditions for BESS operators.
The ancillary services market is relatively unsaturated, with limited participants and consistently elevated prices. This provides BESS assets with an opportunity to capture significant revenue streams before competition increases.
The Greek TSO has a conservative approach to system balancing, resulting in frequent activations and strong demand for flexibility. BESS is uniquely positioned to provide these services efficiently and profitably.
