The partnership
enspired is optimizing a large-scale BESS project developed by Danish investor Obton A/S in a cross-market setup with the support of ancillary service integrator Entelios. One of several joint battery storage projects, this asset is located in the German town of Alfeld in Lower Saxony. With a power capacity of 137.5 MW and an energy capacity of 306 MWh, the facility is one of the largest BESS projects in Europe and the largest operational battery in Germany.
The partnership demonstrates the importance of storage for the renewable buildout and grid stability by seamlessly combining investment expertise and market-leading EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) with cutting-edge optimization technology for effective asset integration and marketization.

The use case
Through enspired's advanced trading platform and sophisticated optimization strategy, the Alfeld battery can participate in wholesales and ancillary services in a fully merchant setup across the day-ahead, intraday, aFRR, and FCR markets, with dynamic adjustments based on current grid needs and price signals. The go-live occurred in capacity batches, with two already operational and the third expected to connect to the market in the upcoming weeks. Initially, the optimization focuses on the wholesale component, with ancillary services to be added once prequalification is complete. The flexible nature of cross-market optimization facilitates the optimal use of resources and makes revenues resilient to changing market conditions. This enables maximized profitability across all markets.
