BBB: Big Breizh Battery

Press note: Vienna, 21 January 2026. Neoen's 92 MW/183 MWh BESS (named Big Breizh Battery or BBB) is the largest in Brittany and one of the biggest battery storage projects in France. enspired, Europe's leading BESS optimizer, and Flexcity, a key provider of flexibility solutions and part of the Veolia Group, have been selected to jointly optimize the 2-hour battery across the wholesale and ancillary markets once it goes live later this year.

"Breizh Big Battery is one of the largest 2-hour BESS projects in France. By combining the advanced trading and flexibility expertise of enspired and Flexcity, we aim to unlock the full potential of this asset and enhance grid efficiency in Brittany," comments Christophe de Brance, Neoen's Head of Energy Management. Currently under construction in the village of Pleyber-Christ in Finistère, Brittany, the asset is expected to commence commercial operations in summer 2026.

In a first for France, the battery will assume a grid-forming role, stabilizing voltage and frequency fluctuations through instant, autonomous balancing as part of a trial conducted with grid operator RTE to retrofit inverters. "After optimizing first-of-their-kind projects in the Netherlands and Belgium, we're looking forward to another success story in our cross-market optimization partnership with Flexcity," says Cécilia Masut, who represents enspired in France.
