The partnership
Wien Energie is Austria’s largest regional utility and primarily serves the Vienna metropolitan area. With supply security, affordability and climate protection at the top of its agenda, the company embraces renewable generation and innovative storage solutions. Combining the two, enspired is optimizing a co-located battery in Wien Energie’s asset portfolio to maximize returns while supporting the grid.
The customer
As the largest regional energy provider in Austria, Wien Energie reliably supplies a city of two million people with power, cooling, heating, e-mobility, and telecommunications.
To promote climate protection and to expand the use of locally available resources, the company invests heavily in renewables such as solar, wind, hydropower, and EV infrastructure.

The use case
For enspired, this project is the first BESS optimization in Austria. The use case features a classic setup consisting of a battery asset co-located with a PV, with 4 MWh available for optimization. In the initial phase, the commercial strategy targets only the wholesale market, but Wien Energie has expressed interest in exploring other available short-term power markets. Furthermore, enspired’s progressive technology offers possibilities to consider PV-specific restrictions in the optimization.
“Batteries deliver flexibility and enable greater expansion of renewables,” says Michael Strebl, CEO of Wien Energie.“We were thrilled to launch this project together with enspired, whose expertise in battery optimization allows us to leverage the asset’s revenue potential with a local partner. We are practically neighbors here in Vienna, and our businesses share a vision of utilizing innovation to ensure supply security.”

The environmental edge
In addition to the solar component, the asset delivers flexibility that facilitates the integration of more renewables into the grid. Batteries can store electricity when renewable production is high and feed it back into the grid when low. BESS is an emerging technology in Austria and serves as an important new pillar of flexibility provision alongside pumped storage.
"Wien Energie is a highly innovative and professional utility – working with them on this project has been smooth and productive throughout", comments Jürgen Mayerhofer, CEO and Co-founder of enspired. "Taking the first asset live in our home country was an important milestone for us. We are looking forward to revolutionizing the local market and hope the partnership with such an influential customer as Wien Energie will inspire other industry players to include battery projects in their portfolio."
