The partnership

As a major actor in Europe’s energy transition, Energy Solutions Group (ESG) manages sustainable energy projects across the Benelux region, among others, a 15 MW/2-hour BESS (battery energy storage system) co-located with PV (photovoltaic) in the Netherlands. enspired, alongside local partner Flexcity, a Veolia subsidiary based in Brussels, was chosen to optimize commercial results in a cross-market setup.

The customer

ESG is the largest independent green power producer (IPP) in the Benelux area, with a total green asset portfolio of over a GW and an operational portfolio of 983 MW at the time of writing (March 2026). The company supplies green power to 250,000 households and reduces CO2 emissions by 400,000 tons annually. ESG plays a leading role in Europe’s transition to clean energy and aims to scale additional projects in green energy production, storage, and EV charging.

The use case

“We see the co-location of BESS and RES (renewable energy sources) as the main investment priority for developers and IPPs in the Netherlands. Moving from the ideation phase to actually operating and optimizing co-located assets has been a great journey for ESG, Flexcity, and enspired. We are proud to deliver attractive returns while taking grid and regulatory constraints into account,” says Aron Vanneste, Flexcity’s Asset Lead of BESS and Renewables.

The project involves a 15 MW/30 MWh battery and a 41 MWp PV sharing a 21.6 MW connection point on a co-located site in Sellingen, Groningen, in the Netherlands. enspired is optimizing the battery in a fully merchant structure, primarily in aFRR (automatic Frequency Restoration Reserve) and wholesale intraday, with Flexcity providing access to ancillary services and crucial local market expertise. To maximize revenues, fully automated trading strategies decide when to place bids and activate dispatch based on real-time market conditions.

ESG CTO Frederik Jansen comments: “Since the market is so dynamic and constantly poses new challenges, it was important to us to engage partners who know how to handle intricate commercial conditions. Demonstrated successes in the Dutch market as well as enspired's solution-oriented approach to regulatory complexities in Germany are perfect testaments to that, and we appreciate the high level of transparency offered by this partnership.”

The environmental edge

Beyond the directly connected solar park, this battery enables the integration of additional renewables, saving more emissions and driving forward the energy transition. “Co-location keeps renewables buildable in an increasingly congested network. By continuously training our algorithms to stay on top of changing market conditions and technical constraints for co-located assets, we make sure the battery performs optimally in the market and continues to safeguard the shift to clean energy. ESG is a true pioneer in green tech, and it’s been a welcome challenge to tackle co-location in the Netherlands for them together with our trusted partner Flexcity,” says Cécilia Masut, enspired’s Senior Advisor for Strategic Partnerships in Benelux and France.
