Optimizing Amsterdam's largest BESS for GIGA Storage

Written by enspired | 12.06.2026

The partnership

GIGA Storage has appointed enspired and Veolia, through its Flexcity offer, as the new optimization partners for GIGA Giraffe, Amsterdam’s largest battery energy storage project. The collaboration marks an important next step in maximizing the asset's commercial performance and flexibility across multiple energy markets.

The customer

GIGA Storage is a Dutch energy storage company that develops, builds, and operates large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) across Europe, combining advanced battery hardware with proprietary software to optimize grid stability and energy market participation. The company aims to deploy 4 GW of energy storage capacity by 2030 to help integrate renewable energy, reduce grid congestion, and accelerate the phase-out of fossil fuel generation.

The use case

The commercial optimization of the Giraffe BESS is based on a merchant profit-sharing model. Together, the partners will focus on unlocking additional value streams while supporting a more flexible and reliable energy system in the Netherlands.

Officially inaugurated in October 2025, GIGA Giraffe is located in the Westhaven area of Amsterdam and comprises twelve Tesla Megapack 2XL units with lithium-ion LFP technology. With a power capacity of 10 MW and an energy storage capacity of 47 MWh, the 4-hour Giraffe asset is the largest battery project in the city of Amsterdam. At the time of writing, the system has been operational for approximately six months, providing balancing services and supporting energy supply reliability in the Amsterdam port area.

As per the optimization structure, enspired and Veolia will apply an integrated cross-market optimization strategy, including commercial activities across wholesale markets, imbalance trading, congestion management services, and ancillary services. The merchant profit-sharing model directly aligns the interests of all project partners, ensuring that strong market performance translates into shared value creation for all parties involved.

The environmental edge

The Netherlands has high renewable penetration, and its grid is regularly congested. Battery projects like Giraffe provide flexibility to balance frequency fluctuations, enhancing network stability and local supply.
