The partnership
As a classic utility, VBB (Versorgungsbetriebe Bordesholm) supplies the municipality of Bordesholm in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, with electricity and heat. What is special about VBB is its focus on renewables, supported by a battery asset deployed as early as 2019. This makes the company a pioneer in utility-based decarbonization initiatives. Optimizing the battery across all markets for VBB, enspired ensures the most profitable commercial performance of the asset.
The customer
VBB is a 100% municipally owned company and operates independently of any corporate group, focusing instead on the interest of the customer. The entire electricity supply is covered by certified green energy, with 80% already coming from renewable sources within the local region.
The use case
VBB’s asset is a standalone grid-scale battery storage with 15 MW and a duration of 1 hour, located on-site in Bordesholm. enspired integrates a full route-to-market service, including asset-specific restrictions and regulatory considerations, in the distribution of the battery capacity across wholesale, FCR, and aFRR. In a live dashboard with custom specifications, VBB can keep track of all trading events in real-time.
“With enspired as our battery optimizer, we can be certain that our asset is in the best possible hands. There is a constant exchange of information in place to ensure our battery performs optimally in the markets. We know that we can count on enspired every step of the way for all our flexibility marketing needs and appreciate the full transparency behind every trading decision,” says VBB CEO Frank Günther. The optimization strategy aims to future-proof revenues and secure long-term profitability by enabling utility-scale use cases.

The environmental edge
As a communal producer, VBB is committed to supplying clean energy to households in the region. In a move away from fossil fuels, the company actively lives this objective by planning to draw 100% of the local power coverage from decentralized sources by the end of 2025. Having a profitable battery asset on-site means VBB can integrate renewable sources more efficiently while also supporting grid stability. Maximiliane Resch, enspired Sales Professional, emphasizes the significance of the partnership: “As an early mover and true model utility, VBB has proven that a battery storage system allows municipal suppliers to do great things for our environment. We are delighted to market this asset at the forefront of the energy transition for such an innovative utility.”
